The journey of a cultural icon — from campus dancer to masquerade legend
Born on March 5, 1995, Kuye Oghenevwede Adegoke grew up navigating life between Okitipupa in Ondo State and Agbarho in Delta State, Nigeria. His humble beginnings and early childhood experiences, which often included vibrant cultural performances and traditional dance, served as a powerful driving force, instilling in him a relentless work ethic and a desire to achieve greatness.
He also developed a deep appreciation for the rich traditions of the Yoruba masquerade, which influenced his upbringing. He pursued his secondary education at RoyField Junior School and Lagos State Model College, Igbokuta. Recognizing the value of a solid academic foundation, he went on to attend the prestigious University of Lagos (UNILAG), where he successfully studied Biology Education.
His creative journey began in 2016 on the UNILAG campus, where he initially found recognition as a dancer known for his captivating cultural performances. While his early 'chest dance' videos brought a taste of campus fame, the financial rewards did not match his effort. Facing the challenge of having multiple growing Instagram accounts repeatedly taken down, he refused to give up, continuously opening new pages and re-strategizing his brand, all while incorporating elements of traditional dance and the vibrant Yoruba masquerade.
Egungun was a dancer who discovered the ideal way to overcome poverty and stand out in a crowded online world. He made a bold, unusual move by performing in a traditional Yoruba masquerade costume. By blending his cultural performance with high-energy modern dancing — and constantly using the outfit to playfully stir up drama and look for trouble — he created a unique brand that completely sets him apart.
